Our Sensei
Charles Marson
Chief Instructor and Director
Charles has 30 years of teaching and training experience. He has traveled to Okinawa, Japan twice to receive instruction from Shigetoshi Senaha Sensei, Kaicho (president) of the Ryusyokai Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate, that is based in Tomigusuku, Okinawa (https://www.ryusyokai.org/).
The purpose of Ryusyokai is to share and preserve the true ways and training methods of Traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate, and to promote 忠誠 loyalty, 名誉honour and 尊敬respect.
Beginning his karate journey at the age of 16, Charles trained in tournament-style Japanese Goju-Ryu Karate, while also enjoying many other sports like football, soccer, and baseball. It was during this time that he was introduced to traditional Okinawan karate. While he enjoyed various sports, he realized his true passion was for Goju-Ryu Karate and Japanese culture. In 1995, he began training Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate under John Cole Sensei at Ken Bu Kan Karate Dojo (Sudbury MMA) and then later would be taught directly by Shigetoshi Senaha Sensei, founder of the Goju-Ryu Ryusyokai Organization.
Charles currently holds the rank of Renshi Go-Dan (5th Degree black belt) from Shigetoshi Senaha Sensei in traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate. He has traveled to attend many seminars in Canada and the U.S.A. where Shigetoshi Senaha Sensei was the seminar feature instructor. He is devoted to developing his physical strength and his spiritual health by studying and training.
Because of his passion for traditional karate, this is where his ambition lies. As his karate journey has evolved over the years, it has led him to open his own Dojo in Lively, in the spring of April 2022 along with Shizuna Yamashiro, his wife. This brings him back to his hometown where he started his traditional karate journey back in 1995.
Charles aims to teach each student to train their Mind, Body, and Spirit through the teachings of traditional Okinawan karate to create the best version of each of those students as they learn about themselves and gain confidence and useful transferable skills to help in everyday life.
